Thigh-hi stockings are just as they sound, stockings that come up to the thigh. If the stockings are stay-ups, then they offer a band of silicone around the top of each stocking that sticks to the wearer's skin and keeps them in place. If not a stay-up, then the stockings must be attached to a garter belt or garters that may descend from a bustier or merry widow garment. At one time in history this practice was a necessity, but now the choice to wear stockings with garters is merely a selection based on preference.
